Between the years 1980 and 2010, the population of inmates that were incarcerated in jail and prison in the United States has increased.

Based from the data that the National Research Council released, the population of prisoners in state prisons has seen an increase of about 222% between the years 1980 and 2010. Please see attached file for statistics provided by the Bureau of Justice Statistics:
