Answer: there was enough land to grow food as well as cash crops

Africans were sold as slaves to work on sugarcane plantations in the Carribean while in Virginia, to work on the tobacco plantation.

Slaves in Virginia were better off than those in the Caribbean because there was enough land to grow food as well as cash crops.

Slaves in Virginia were given weekly food rations. Landowners also provide slaves vegetable gardens which supply additional fresh produce for consumption.

Morning meals were also in the slaves' cabins.

There was no such reported treatment for slaves in the Carribean.
