A train is traveling at a constant speed in miles per hour.

Which equation models the data in the table?

y=60x−80

y = 20x

y=80x−60

y = x + 80
Hours (x) Miles (y)
1              20
2            100
3            180
4             260

Just trying the offered equations for x=2 will help you sort it out. You want to find the equation that gives you the table value for x=2, which is 100.

For x=2, the equations give you ...

A: 60·2-80 = 40 . . . . ≠ 100

B: 20·2 = 40 . . . . . . .≠ 100

C: 80·2 -60 = 100 . . probable answer

D: 2 +80 = 82 . . . . . ≠ 100

The best choice is the 3rd one: y=80x−60
