The capital letter such as "S" represent the dominant trait and the small letter such as "s" represent the recessive trait.

When you see an image with "Ss" it means that the dominant trait has applied. When you encounter and image with "ss" it means that the recessive trait has applied.

When Mendel crossed true-breeding plants (P generation) then the offsprings produced as a result of this cross constituted the first filial generation F1.

When the progenies of the F1 generation were crossed this resulted in the offsprings the constituted the second filial generation, F2.

Now, all the offsprings in the F1 generation were the ones that showed the dominant character however it was in the F2 generation that 1/4th offsprings showed the recessive traits.
