So the expression would be
P=L+w for the rectangle.

P is the unknown
It doesn’t matter where the length and the width go for this equation so if the rectangle is on a graph count the boxes around it or if it has numbers on the side just add them and you get the perimeter

Perimeter is when perimeter is when you add the sides
