Nixon and Humphrey were the candidates in 1968. Nixon opposed the vietnam war n focused on winning the southern states. Humphrey was hampered by the war, assassination of MLK n the subsequent riots. The popular votes were close but Nixon won majority in electoral colleges due to the southern states.

Richard Nixon was the Republican candidates while Democrats was Hubert Humphrey. Nixon won on a platform of restoring law and order and new leadership on Vietnam war. Humphrey promised to continue the war on poverty and support the Civil Rights Movement. He trailed badly in polls but caught up to Nixon before the election.
