Similar just means that the two figures have the same ratio, so the first thing we are going to look for is the ratio.

We take a side from both figures that are congruent and make it into a fraction.

Side AE= 12
Side IJ = 4

Ratio = 12/4 Simplified to 3.

We already know segment lengths

AE = 12 congruent to BC = 12
ED = 4 congruent to DC =4

All we need to know now is segment BA, this is where we use the ratio of the two figures.

Segment HI is congruent to segment BA.
All we have to do here is multiply segment HI by the ratio to find segment BA.

2 × 3 = 6
So, BA = 6.

Now add all of our segments from the larger figure together!

6 + 12 + 12 + 4 + 4 = 38

Figure ABCDE has a perimeter of 38 in.
