A dog runs from point O to B. The dog reaches A at 2.3 s into the sprint. Then the dog reaches C at 4.1 s. What is the average velocity of the dog from A to C?

we could take a peek at this scenario with say

\bf \begin{array}{cccll}&\stackrel{x}{seconds}&\stackrel{y}{meters}\\&\text{\textemdash\textemdash\textemdash}&\text{\textemdash\textemdash\textemdash}\\A&2.3&2.0\\C&4.1&4.0\end{array}

now, keeping in mind that the average rate of change is really just the slope, then

\bf (\stackrel{x_1}{2.3}~,~\stackrel{y_1}{2.0})\qquad (\stackrel{x_2}{4.1}~,~\stackrel{y_2}{4.0})\\\\\\slope = m\implies \cfrac{\stackrel{rise}{ y_2- y_1}}{\stackrel{run}{ x_2- x_1}}\implies \cfrac{4.0-2.0}{4.1-2.3}\implies \cfrac{2}{1.8}\implies 1.\overline{11}
