we can expand it

`\sum _(i=1)^8\:2^(i-1)=2^(1-1)+2^(2-1)+2^(3-1)+2^(4-1)+2^(5-1)+2^(6-1)+2^(7-1)+2^(8-1)`

`\sum _(i=1)^8\:2^(i-1)=2^(0)+2^(1)+2^(2)+2^(3)+2^(4)+2^(5)+2^(6)+2^(7)`

we can simplify it

and we get

`\sum _(i=1)^8\:2^(i-1)=255`............Answer
