How do the signs of b and c in standard form, x2 + bx + c, affect the signs of p and q in factored form, (x + p)(x + q)?

They affect the signs of p and q in different ways.

Firstly, if c is negative, it means that p and q have opposite signs.

If c is positive, then it means that p and q have the same signs. However, to determine whether they are both positive or both negative, we then have to look to b. If b is negative, both p and q would be negative. If b is positive, then both p and q are positive.
