if the girls are "g" and the boys are "b"

g + b = 13

b = g + 7 <--- 7 more boys than girls

\bf g+\boxed{g+7}=13\implies 2g=6\implies g=\cfrac{6}{2}\implies g=3\\\\\\\stackrel{\textit{since there are 3 gals}}{b = g+7}\implies b=3+7
