What were the first plants that did not require water for reproduction?

Gymnosperms were the first seed plants. They do not make flowers or fruits, so their seeds are unprotected, hence the name gymnosperms which means "naked seed".

These seeds are wind-dispersed pollen that doesn't need water for fertilization.
