If we lived in a state where virtue was profitable, common sense would make us saints, but since we see that avarice, anger, pride and stupidity commonly profit far beyond charity, modesty, justice and thought, perhaps we must stand fast a little, even at the risk of being heroes.

A famous quote by "Sir Thomas More".

These words were composed in the renowned play "A Man for All Seasons" by Robert Bolt in light of the life of Sir Thomas More. The plot depends on the genuine story of Sir Thomas More, the sixteenth century Chancellor of Britain, who declined to embrace Lord Henry VIII's desire to separate from his wife Catherine of Aragon, who did not gave him a son, with the goal that he could wed Anne Boleyn, the sister of his former mistress.
