If you want the exact value:

x^2 = 40

Square root both sides:

x = sqrt (40) = 2 * sqrt (10)

If you want a rounded answer:

sqrt (40) is about 6.324

if x^2=40 you would need to square root both sides to get x alone therefore x=6.3
