Antagonistic muscles are pair of muscles that work together. It is as simple as this:

When one of the muscles contracts the other relaxes doing that on and forth as a way of creating movement. One of the muscles is called antagonist and the other one is called a prime mover.

Hope it helped,

Happy homework/ study/ exam!

First we need to explain the meaning of antagonistic:

antagonistic muscle - a muscle that opposes the action of another; the quadriceps and hamstrings are antagonistic muscles.

Antagonistic muscles work by:

while one is relaxing the other is contracting so like a push and pull movement. When the main muscle contracts the antagonist muscle relaxes.
