When sodium azide is activated in an automobile airbag, nitrogen gas and sodium are produced according to the equation:

2NaN3(s)—>2N3(s)+3N2(g)

If 0.41 mol of NaN3 reacts, what mass of nitrogen would result?

Answer:-

17.22 grams

Explanation:-

The balanced chemical equation is

2NaN3(s)—>2Na(s)+3N2(g)

According to the equation

2 mol of NaN3 gives 3 mol of Nitrogen N2

∴ 0.41 mol of NaN3 gives ( 3 mol x 0.41 mol)/ (2 mol)

= 0.615 mol

Molar mass of N2 = 14 x 2 = 28 gram / mol

Mass of nitrogen = 0.615 mol x 28 gram / mol

= 17.22 grams
