It helps to know geography and a little Latin when learning about history, Dillon.

The thing in the middle of North and West Africa is called the Saharan Desert. So to go through it, you have to cross it. Trans is the Latin root word for cross, so with context we know that the trans-Saharan trade is trade moving across the Saharan Desert, from north to West and vice versa.
