All of the following were reasons why some American colonists, like John Dickinson, were initially reluctant to declare independence from Great Britain, EXCEPT:

A. Many still considered themselves British and did not wish to separate from the mother country.
B. Many just wanted the British government to repeal the taxes and reforms and return to a more laissez-faire (“do as you wish”) attitude toward the colonies. C. Many feared separation because the colonies were so economically, politically, socially, and culturally tied to Great Britain.
D. Many were fearful that the French would eventually return to reclaim their empire in North America.

The answer is D. Although France was a world superpower at the time, even when it was involved in the Americas, it was focused up North and towards Canada. The more important concerns of those reluctant to leave were the immediate threat the British Empire posed and their connection and loyalty to the crown. France never had a true "empire" to reclaim in America, and if anything supported the colonists withdraw from the British Empire.
