The night watch or the watchmen were assigned to keep cities, towns, and villages safe. They were a group of men who volunteered to maintain peace and safety within their territories. The night watch are usually composed of several men, a constable, and 6 watchmen. Over the course of the years, volunteers were replaced by criminals who were punished by staying up at night and looking out for people's safety

In counties, rural places, and unincorporated areas, the sheriffs were assigned to maintain peace and order. They are appointed by governors to become law enforcement figures who are tasked to serve legal documents, appear in court trials, and collect the people's taxes
