Ella gives 1/3 of the candies to her sister.

-

1 - 1/3 = 2/3

Ella has 2/3 of the candies left.

-

4 + 12 = 18

2/3 of the candies = 18

-

Find the original number of candies:

2/3 = 18

1/3 = 18 ÷ 2 = 9

3/3 (1 whole) = 9 x 3 = 27

-

Answer: There were 27 candies in the box originally.
