To simplify this expression, start by distributing the negative to both the op and the bottom of the fraction.
This eliminates the parenthesis and gives you:
-2x/xy

Variables that are the same and are on both the top and the bottom of an equation cancel each other out. With this understanding, you know that you can eliminate the x’s.
This leaves you with:
-2/y
