1/2 + 1/4 (must find common denominator you can use 4 here since a multiple of 2 is 4 and the 1/4 fraction will stay the same) to convert 1/2 to a fraction with a denominator of 4 multiple 2 to both the numerator and denominator: 1 times 2 = 2 and 2 times 2 = 4 giving you 2/4 then just add : 5 2/4 + 2 1/4
5 + 2 = 7
2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
final answer: 7 3/4

Jackie ate 5 and 1/2 puddings, and his sister ate 2 and 1/4th puddings. 5 and 1/2+2 and 1/4=7 and 3/4th’s since 1/2 is equal to 2/4th’s you just have to add the extra 1/4th from the sister
