m + 4 = 5m - 12

Subtract m from both sides.

4 = 4m - 12

Add 12 to both sides

16 = 4m

Divide both sides by 4

m = 4

Isolate the m. Subtract 5m from both sides, and 4 from both sides

m (-5m) + 4 (-4) = 5m (-5m) - 12 (-4)

m - 5m = -12 - 4

Simplify

-4m = -16

Isolate the m. Divide -4 from both sides

-4m/-4 = -16/-4

m = -16/-4

Note that dividing two negative numbers will result in a positive answer

m = -16/-4

m = 4

m = 4, or (B) is your answer
