Who are the Ewells? How does Harper Lee characterize them?

The Ewells realize that they are the lowest of the lows among the whites in Maycomb. They have no cash, no instruction, and no rearing. The single thing that raises them at any standard in the community is the way that they're white.

The Ewells are a very poor family in maycomb. Their dad is a drunk. Harper lee characterizes them as the Lowest and poorest family in maycomb.
