to find the answer first turn both numbers into improper fractions

-1 13/14 becomes -27/14

1 5/9 becomes 14/9

now multiply them


(-27)/(14) * (14)/(9)

you can cancel out the 14s


(-27)/(1) * (1)/(9)

now divide 9 to the top of the first fraction and to the bottom of the second one


(-3)/(1) * (1)/(1)

now multiply

-3/1 is your answer

that is basically -3
