A textbook store sold a combined total of 435 math and sociology textbooks in a week. the number of sociology textbooks sold was 43 less than the number of math textbooks sold. how many textbooks of each type were sold?

You have to subtract 43 from the original 435. then split it in half and you get 196 which is how many sociology books there are. then subtract 196 from 435 and you get 239. so there are 239 math books and 196 sociology books.
