You want to replace the countertops in a kitchen. One counter measures 24 inches by 6 feet. The other is 30 inches by 4 feet. If the new countertop costs $42.00 per square foot, what will be the cost of the new top?

There are 12 inches in a foot, so ...

... 24 inches is 2 feet,

... 30 inches is 2.5 feet.

The total area of the existing countertop is

... (2 ft)×(6 ft) + (2.5 ft)×(4 ft)

... = 12 ft² + 10 ft²

... = 22 ft²

Then the cost of new tops will be

(22\,ft^2)* (\$42.00)/(1\,ft^2)=\$924.00

First, convert everything to feet.

24 inches become 2 feet, and 30 inches become 2.5 feet.

Then, calculate the square feet of counter top. To do that, multiply length by height.

2 x 6 = 12

2.5 x 4 = 10

Then add them together

10 + 12 = 22

And then calculate per square feet, so multiply 22 by the cost, 42.

22 x 42 = 924

The cost would be $924
