-Jamestown: Virginia, warm climate, defensive position, good for plantations

-Plymouth: Massachusetts, cold climate, good harbor, thin rocky soil, lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and trade prospered

Reasons for Colony:

-Jamestown: claiming land and riches

-Plymouth: escaping religious persecution

Early Setbacks:

-Jamestown: inexperience, unwillingness to work, poor Indian relations, disease, starvation

-Plymouth: hunger, disease, environmental hazards

Religious Differences:

-Jamestown: Anglican church

-Plymouth: Puritans

Government:

-Jamestown: representative gov.

-Plymouth: self-gov. agreement- Mayflower Compact

Relations With Indians:
