Stem cells differ from other kinds of cells in the body. All stem cells have three genereal characteristics regardless of their source: they are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods; they are unspecialized and lastly, they can give rise to specialized cell types.

Moreover, stem cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods of time. Unlike other cells such as muscles cells, blood cells or nerve cells-which are incapable of self-replicating- stem cells may replicate or proliferate many times.
