Yes, reading is a fundamental step in developing one’s writing skills. Besides having exposure to new vocabulary and expanding basic knowledge, reading independently also gives aspiring writers the opportunity to look at experienced authors’ writing style and build their own based off of many ideas they see and enjoy. By reading varied works in many genres, one can get many different ways to express their ideas, from different ways to introduce and idea to what diction is the best to fit the mood of your writing, or even how to embed types of figurative language into your writing. Reading is the basis for good writing skills and can always help an individual grow in their abilities.
I hope this helps! :)
