Water enters the leaf through specialized cells know as xylem whreas carbon dioxide enters the leaf through structures called stomata located within the leaf. Carbon dioxide cannot pass through the protective waxy layer covering the leaf (cuticle), but it can enter the leaf through an opening called stoma, flanked by two guard cells.
