Erikson felt that our own thoughts and fears of death are balanced by a "life-affirming" involvement in the present.
Thoughts of a man's own demise are adjusted by the acknowledgment that they will live on through kids, grandkids, incredible grandkids, and the network all in all. This acknowledgment produces what Erikson calls an "life-affirming involvement" in the present. The battle of respectability versus give up expects individuals to take part in an existence survey, the procedure by which individuals think about the occasions and encounters of their lifetimes. To accomplish uprightness, a man must deal with the decisions and occasions that made his or her life remarkable.
