DNA is the storage molecule of genetic material in living cells, however, in order for these long chains of DNA to fit into the cell, they are wrapped around certain proteins called HISTONES to form Chromatin. Chromatin, then undergoes further coiling and folding to form thread-like structures called chromosome. The genetic material is seen and transferred as chromosomes.

The DNA also contains segments that comprises of nucleotide sequences called GENES. These nucleotide-containing segments encode the formation of functional gene products (RNA or proteins).
