A taxi cab charges a flat-fee (or one time fee) of $3.50

the taxi cab also charges $1.20 per mile.

y = total

x = amount of miles

Each mile costs $1.20, with the amount of miles being a variable (x): 1.20x

You're equation will look like:

y = $1.20x + $3.50

hope this helps
