It takes 40 min for a bus to cover 36 miles. A car travels 1.4 times faster. When will they meet if they started 36 miles apart and simultaneously move towards each other?

Their closing speed is the total of the speed of the bus and the speed of the car:

... closing speed = (bus speed) + (1.4 times bus speed) = 2.4 × bus speed

The closing time is inversely proportional to the closing speed. When the bus alone covers the distance, the time required is 40 minutes. When the distance is covered 2.4 times as fast, the closing time is

... (40 min)/2.4 = 16 2/3 minutes

The vehicles will meet 16 minutes and 40 seconds after they start..
