Mary lives 1365 miles from Brady. Brady drives at a constant rate of 60 mph and Mary travels at a constant rate of 45 mph. If they start driving toward each other at the same time on the same road, how many hours will it take them to meet?

Let m= distance Mary drives; let b=distance Brady drives. Then m+b=1365:


(45 mph)(t) + (60 mph)(t) = 1365 mi


Then (105 mph)(t) = 1365 mi, and


1365 mi

t = ----------------- = 13 hours: time req'd for the 2 to meet.

105 mph

Answer: 13 hours

Explanation:

60 + 45 = 105

1365 / 105 = 13
