Parliament raised taxes on the American colonies in the 1760s because

The French and Indian War ended in 1760 and Britain was left with a massive amount of debt. Parliament felt that the colonies hadn’t been contributing enough tax-wise which is true since the colonies had enjoyed salutary neglect prior to the French and Indian War. As a result, they decided that the colonies should share the burden and raised taxes.
