Find each missing length to the nearest tenth
6^2+3^2=c^2

Remark

the the formula for Pythagorean theorem is a^2+b^2 = c^2


Step 1

Put the numbers in the equation and solve:

6^2 + 3^2 = c^2

36 + 9 = c^2

45 = c^2


Step 3

Figure out what c^2 is equal to by applying radicals:

√45 = √c^2

√45 = √9 x 5 = 5√3

c = 5√3

If you compute the squares and sum them, the equation becomes



c^2 = 36+9 = 45


In order to solve for
c, you need the extract the square root from both sides:



c = \pm√(45) \approx \pm6.7


Please note that if this problem is about the lengths of the sides of a triangle, you can only accept the positive solution, since it wouldn't make any sense to consider a side with negative length.
