What is the slope of the line given by the equation below? y = -2x + 8

Hey!



This question can be solved in two ways. One, using slope-intercept form, or two, using standard form. For the sake of this problem, I'll be using standard form.


Now, let's start by converting the equation we have into standard form.


***NOTE: The standard form of an equation is Ax + By = C.


The first step would be to add positive two 'x' to both sides of the equation. We do this so as to completely shift the equations position, to transform it into standard form.


Original Equation :

y = -2x + 8


New Equation {Added Plus 2x to Both Sides} :

y + 2x = -2x + 8 + 2x


And now we solve, or in other words, simplify.


Old Equation :

y + 2x = -2x + 8 + 2x


New Equation {Old Equation Simplified} :

y + 2x = 8


Usually, when finding the slope of an equation m will equal the slope. So, m will be the variable that represents our slope. Now we'll take our A over our B, and transform it into a negative fraction. So, it'll look something like this...



m = -(2)/(1)


Now, we simplify that to get our final answer.



m = -(2)/(1) = -2


So, this means that the slope of the equation y = -2x + 8 is -2.

Follow the "y = mx + b" formula, in which "m", stands for slope, and "b" stands for y-intercept


m = slope

m is located to the left attached to x.


-2 is in the place of m, therefore, -2 is the slope of the equation given.


-2 is your answer
