8/11 of the lot was unoccupied.  Thus, the # of add'l cars that could be parked there would be (8/11)(231 cars) = 168 (answer).

Hello!

3/11 was occupied. That means there's 8/11 left because 1 - 3/11 = 8/11

You have to find 8/11 of 231

(8)/(11) * (231)/(1) = (1,848)/(11) = 168
