William Marbury was supposed to be appointed Justice of the Peace.
However, this appointment never happened. This was because Marbury was appointed this position under President John Adams. However, Marbury never received the paperwork while Adams was in office. Adams appointment was done at the very end of his term. Instead of receiving this appointment under the next president, Jefferson told Secretary of State James Madison not to deliver his appointment paper work. This would ultimately lead to the Supreme Court case Marbury vs. Madison.
