The National Party (NP) won the majority of 5 seats (40%) in the elections of 1948, because of that the NP had to come to power as two parties into one, one of them was the white supremacy party, that introduced Apartheid and the other was the Nationalist Party that sought to mobilize the Afrikaner community.
Because of that, after the election, the government removed the symbols of British ascendancy to establish Afrikaner nationalism and its symbols.
This resulted in a growth of the National Party from 1948 to 1977 it increased its parliamentary majority in almost every election.
