Last week, Mason studied 6 more hours than Jane. if they studied a combined total of 34 hours. How many hours did Mason work last week ?

Identify and write out a system of linear equations: M=J+6, and M+J=34.

Then solve your system for M and J: (J+6)+J=34, or 2J= 28, and J=14 (hours).
M= J+6 = 14+6 = 20.
