Let X = time
Jim paddles 4 mph for x time = 4x
John paddles 5 mph for x time = 5x
write an equation: 4x +5x = 3 miles
9x = 3 miles
Divide both sides by 9:
x = 3/9
x = 1/3 of an hour = 20 minutes.
