Why have ethnologists focused their study on "nonliterate" peoples?

Ethnography is about studying a society's culture and social norms. Nonliterate people are studied because they don't keep records of their own history and culture because they don't have a system of writing. It's difficult to study a society who has no records. Historians would have to rely strictly on artifacts.
