The area is one side length multiplied by the other. The area is how much space a two-dimensional shape takes up. For example, if you had a square with side lengths of 4, you can multiply two adjacent (touching) sides, giving you 16 as the area.
The perimeter is the distance around a shape. In our 4 by 4 square, we add up all the side lengths. 4+4+4+4=16. Our perimeter is 16.
