The scale of a map is 1 inch : 24 miles. What map distance represents 75 miles?

Answer:

3.125 inches, or about 3 inches

Explanation:

setting up your problem:
(1)/(24) = (x)/(75)

cross-multiply to get: 75 = 24x

divide by 24 to get the variable alone:
(75)/(24) = (24x)/(24)

you are left with: 3.125 = x

* x stood for the missing length, the length on the map
