Gail spent $4 and Jackie spent $7

Explanation:

Let j = Jackie

Let g - Gail

j = 2g -1 j + g = 11

substitute 2g - 1 for j in the second equation

j + g = 11

2g - 1 +g =11 Combine the g's

3g -1 = 11 Add 1 to both sides of the equation

3g = 12 Divide both sides by 3

g = 4

Plug 4 in for g to find j

j = 2g -1

j = 2(4) -1

j = 8 -1

j = 7
