Technology improvements helped Columbus build better ships and better navigation systems such as the compass and map.

Christopher Columbus launched Spain’s imperial ambitions. He was born in Genoa, Italy, around 1451. He was able to learn how to navigate on voyages in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

He carried out four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Castile and Aragon.
