Goods were expensive because the g0ods were imported from Great Britain. this was in line with mercantilism that had placed the colonies as source of raw materials and market for finished goods.However, the war of 1812, and the subsequent blockades and embargo was a lesson for the Americans on the need to develop their local industries.
